Our Small Town of Tofino
Tofino is a small tourist town on the West Coast of Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada. It is located in Clayoquot Sound and we have five beautiful local beaches that provide great surf year round. With a small year round population of 1800, this old fishing town now receives over a million tourists annually. On any given night in the summer, our numbers balloon to 22000!

The most important issue facing Surfrider Tofino is the commercial development of Tofino’s beaches due to tourism. The popularity of Tofino as a tourism hotspot is threatening the very beaches which people from around the world come to visit. Surfrider Tofino is actively involved in minimizing these impacts and ensuring coastal beach integrity, clean water and beach access for all.

Surfrider Tofino
Surfrider Tofino Canada is a registered Canadian charity based in Tofino founded in 2002. Our Executive Committee comprises of Dawn Alex, Louise Rodgers, and Ron Weeks.

We are entirely volunteer-run and rely on grassroots fundraising activities to support our various community initiatives.

Surfrider has become the de-facto steward of Tofino’s local beaches. In cooperation with other local environmental and community organizations such as the
Raincoast Education Society-Raincoast Interpretive Centre,
Pacific Rim Whale Festival and
Friends of Clayoquot Sound, we undertake regular beach clean-ups and hold family-friendly community beach events.

We have also made considerable financial investment toward the enhancement of Tofino beaches. We donated $5,000 to the District of Tofino for the establishment of a public toilet facility at Cox Bay. We provided the funds and worked with Parks & Recreation to erect Surf Etiquette signs to promote safe behaviour in the water.

Recently, Surfrider has been collaborating with Parks & Recreation staff on a number of new initiatives that will further improve the cleanliness, safety and appeal of Tofino’s beaches. Surfrider is contributing significant financial resources toward these projects, including a $3,100 cheque earmarked for bike racks, dog bag dispensers and surf etiquette signs.

Volunteers are always welcome! So, if you’d like to help out just visit our Join page or email us at info@surfridertofino.org.
